Dubrovnik is one of the most-filmed cities in Europe. Its Old Town walls, fortress towers and limestone streets have stood in for fantasy capitals, galaxy outposts and medieval kingdoms in some of the most recognisable productions of recent decades.

Game of Thrones (2012-2017)

The Old Town of Dubrovnik served as King's Landing in seasons 2 through 7 of Game of Thrones. Fort Lovrijenac doubled as the Red Keep; the city walls, Blackwater Bay, and Blackgate featured throughout. A dedicated fan tour industry has grown up around the locations.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017)

Lokrum Island, a short boat ride from Dubrovnik's Old Port, served as a filming location for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The island already has a Game of Thrones museum and is a popular day-trip destination with a botanical garden and Benedictine monastery ruins.

Other productions

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) filmed on the Stradun. The TV series Knightfall (2017) used Fort Lovrijenac as a principal location. The Witcher has filmed in Croatia, with Dubrovnik and other coastal towns featuring in the production.

The international film festival

An independent international film festival was held in Dubrovnik from 2003, showcasing international art-house cinema and hosting an academic programme on Croatian film and cultural history. The festival presented a Libertas Award to producers and actors in 2004.
