Location: Pred Dvorom 3, Old Town, Dubrovnik, opposite Sponza Palace
Venue style: Indoor city repertory theatre · main stage and studio · year-round drama, opera and dance
History
Named after Marin Držić (1508–1567), the Renaissance playwright often called the 'Croatian Shakespeare', the Marin Držić Theatre is Dubrovnik's principal repertory house, staging drama, opera and dance from September through June. While the Dubrovnik Summer Festival focuses on the city's spectacular outdoor venues, the Marin Držić Theatre is where the city's arts life continues through the quieter months. Its works by Držić — comedies like Dundo Maroje and Skup — are regularly revived. The building's main stage seats approximately 300; a studio/chamber stage holds around 100.
