History
The Rector's Palace was the seat of the Rector of the Republic of Ragusa from the 14th century until Napoleon abolished the Republic in 1808. Originally Gothic, it was reconstructed after a fire in 1435 and a gunpowder explosion in 1463, acquiring Renaissance and Baroque elements. The atrium — with its sculpted capitals, arched loggia and candlelit ambience — became the signature chamber music and opera venue of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival. Monteverdi's The Coronation of Poppea was staged here in 1964. The Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra performs regular concerts in the atrium; performances by visiting soloists are among the festival's most prized tickets. Today the palace also houses the Cultural History Museum.
